What is your opinion of the new generation of low cost large diaphragm microphones, for instance the Rode NT 1A? How would you compare a mic like this with a Neuman U89?

Interestingly I'm not

Interestingly I'm not familiar with the 89, although I've been using Neumann mics right through my career, particularly the original tube 47 and 48. M50s on occasion for distant miking. I think it has to be said that the number of modern mics out right now is huge. The old school guys like me just keep coming back to the old faithfuls (the old neumanns, the old AKGs and so on) because they're hard to beat. There are a couple of mics out there right now, particularly the Audio Technica 40 series, which I swear by for vocals. Generally speaking, I don't get excited by the latest mic because they don't necessarily do a better job than a mic that's been out for 50 years. That's the basic viewpoint I have on that...
