I wondered if anyone has any wisdom to offer on the subject of mixing for MP3
I just recently (ok chissie pressie) started using a new Archos player and there is a vast difference in the sound quality between the MP3 and MP4 formats (of course). Going on to listen to some of my own recordings on it, they seem very fuzzy and unclear and also shrill in places. A lot of the issues I am learning about, like placing instruments within the mix are much more obviously needing solutions. Increase in volume seems to reduce the quality. Myspace seems to be very kind to them though and while clearly not professional, they are much clearer, if rather quiet. A consumer item but useful tool I guess for learning with!
I look forward to any ideas offered,
Phil
Hi
What software are you using for this ??
This article I read came to mind when I read your post, Dave Pensado has some great thoughts on the subject:

There is a section near the bottom of the article called "The mp3 factor", I hope you will find it useful. I cannot wait until storage and bandwidth allow someone to stream and download wav files the same way mp3s and other compressed formats are nowadays.

Hi
I agree, but Dave Pensado did fail to mention that the effects get progressively worse with the complexity and the overall level of the material.
I do recall that Mr. AP stated when he mixed / recorded pink floyd there were only four instruments at any one time which helps conversion of his material to MP3.
However, if you have listened to spotify (without the normalising function) there seems to be some progress in the quality facor that is available on dedicated internet music providers, I suppose MP4 will play an important part in pushing up the quality level if it does not already do.
Hi Again,
Have tried 3 times since my last post with the same result each time.
I initiate a download to my PC (not streaming). The download starts and settles in to a transfer rate of around 136KB/Sec then just hangs and doesn't progress any further. This usually happens after I have received somewhere between 23% to 51% of the file. The download hangs there for up to an hour or so and then I receive an error.
Connection to the server has been reset.I am using a new Toshiba Laptop 2.09Ghz with 2GB RAMConnection to my ISP is ADSL at 8MB and is very reliable.
My download should be occuring off peak as I would be in a completely different timezone to where I assume the majority of users accessing these files would be.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
