Here, There and Everywhere by Geoff Emerick & Howard Massey

Here, There and Everywhere he reveals the creative process of the band in the studio

Image yourself aged 19 and fresh out of nowhere, and suddenly you’re the lead engineer for the biggest band in the world. The record you’re working on is Revolver and the band is The Beatles: four lads from Liverpool only a couple of years older.

If that’s not enough to turn you loopy then what the heck is?

Geoff Emerick went on to engineer another half dozen Beatles records; the majority of their collective creative output. This book is his story. Very much his story. Though there are widely accepted revelations about his favorite (and some unique) vocal chains, tips and tricks, this book also contains many ‘insights’ into the working of the Beatles that several other contemporaries strongly contest. That’s not the point though. This book is Geoff Emerick’s version of what happened at Abbey Road back in the late 1960s and how Geoff felt about what happened. Recording studios are hotbeds of rivalries, insecurities, hidden gems and dark secrets. No two people will ever describe the same session the same way. Recording is a deeply personal thing, even if you’re ‘just’ the engineer.

Alan Parsons worked alongside Emerick, with The Beatles, and constantly pays homage to Geoff’s creative genius, which is still part of the recording lexicon to this day. Emerick engineered Julian Colbeck's (Alan’s partner in ASSR) first single in 1973 at Air Studios in London and testifies to the somewhat curmudgeonly wizardry of the man - especially to a bunch of then 19 year old musicians on their first outing.

This if often referred to as a ‘flawed’ book because of its subjective stance. But really? Maybe one should expect a more balanced story from a ‘balance engineer’ but Geoff Emerick was not a diplomat or everyone’s chum, he was a massively talented sound engineer working with possibly the most creative force of the twentieth century. We want to hear his side of the story, and here it is; indeed there, and everywhere as well.
