ASSR Launches A Revolution in Education
Thursday, September 20, 2012

The ASSR Team believes video plays a vital role in the future of education. Video will never be a replacement to teachers and lecturers, but visual learning is a powerful experience for both inside and outside the classroom.

With this philosophy in mind, the hardworking team has created a groundbreaking tool for educators and students known as the ASSR Educational License. The course-wide license features a brand new interface for easy access to all 24 lessons of the award-winning Alan Parsons' Art & Science of Sound Recording video series on Mac and PC platforms. The ASSR Educational License also includes access to the Student Center, a central hub for students to take online quizzes, discuss topics on forums, and purchase music gear from retail partner Keyfax.com at discounted prices.

Educator Salman Khan, speaking at the influential TED conference in 2011 talks about the power of video technology to 'humanize' the classroom because it frees up instructors' time to "teach" and "be creative" as opposed to drilling. Everyone really does learn at their own pace and acknowledging this and giving students the control of the play and repeat button enables everyone to achieve their full potential.

Alan Parsons’ groundbreaking Art & Science Of Sound Recording video series now available as an App for Education

Announcing the ASSR Educational License: Alan Parsons’ award-winning video series on sound recording, The Art & Science Of Sound Recording (ASSR), is now available for educational institutions as an installable app.

The Educational License comprises all 10-hours of high quality videos contained in the original DVD set installed in a custom video browser for Mac or PC workstations.

Installed simply from a USB card, icons for the first five videos appear in the navigation slider with left and right arrows to locate all 24 videos in the series—everything from acoustics to live recording sessions to mixing to the popular ‘Dealing With Disasters’.

This simple but powerful navigation system is key to letting students use the app as an immediate source of reference during study or even while undertaking a recording project. The video browser features play/pause, time skipping, volume and full screen controls and a clickable “Lesson Guide” provides instant access to each video’s main ‘topics.’

Even though the Educational License videos play locally on each workstation, the Art & Science Of Sound Recording website can be called up from the within the app. Additional online resources include a forum—monitored by Alan Parsons himself—source materials such as uncompressed audio files and a ‘Student Center’ where all students at an educational institution can take quizzes on each of the 24 videos. Course instructors can monitor also quiz results, per student, per quiz, or per class via a sophisticated ‘backend’ that producers KEYFAX NewMedia set up for each school.

With prices ranging from $80 for a single License to $60 for 11+ workstations the Educational License is the most cost-effective delivery medium for the Alan Parsons’ Art & Science Of Sound Recording series and is available in English, Spanish and German language editions.

The Educational License can be purchased direct or through music and pro audio dealers via distributor Hal Leonard.

ASSR's Internet Recording Trailer
Thursday, June 7, 2012

I have recently been using iMovie for iPad to create quick videos without my computer. The trailers feature is incredibly easy to use and deliver a Hollywood-style movie trailer. ASSR is by no means a Hollywood film, but the iMovie trailer-treatment adds a sharp degree of drama and epic-ness. Check out the video below!

Google Moog doodle

Today's Google Doodle is an incredible tribute to the late Bob Moog, pioneer of electronic music and inventor of the Moog synthesizer. Risk spending hours of your day with the interactive (and HTML 5 Web Audio API-dependent) sound generator and recorder.

Google have really outdone themselves this time. Unfortunately, the click-and-jam experience only seems to work on Chrome and Firefox browsers. As much as we would love to play the web synth on our iPhones and iPads, it is not currently possible. Still, you should fire up the page on a computer since the whole affair is really quite amazing. As this doodle is a sign of things to come (Google is always experimenting with emerging technologies), we cannot wait for the future of web audio production!

Marc Doty from AutomaticGainsay has even hightailed it and thrown together a tutorial video on YouTube for detailed instructions on how to operate the synth. Thanks Marc! The video is embedded below:

"Where's My Snare?"

Simon Phillips' snare

Most drummers don't get enough credit, right? In The Onion's AV Club article Snaring The Listener, the publication has compiled a fantastic sonic collage of the music world's most recognizable snare hits.

The list of iconic snare drum intros leans heavily on 1970s to 1990s radio rock, but most listeners will enjoy going through the 25-song selection and pay careful attention to the subtle and not-so-subtle differences in snare drum sounds. Do you think of the drums as a collection of many instruments or as a single instrument? Hmm...

So I guess this article is the ultimate response to Eminem's shady question, which somehow deserves its own Facebook page.

Noble Studios Control Room

Alan Parsons’ Master Class Training Sessions touch down in their fifth country since the inaugural event in Argentina in 2011 with the announcement of a Level 2 MCTS at the prestigious Noble Street Studios located downtown in Canada’s music city, Toronto, on May 26, 2012.

Dave Barrett TrioHosted and produced by Canadian distributor Global Music Depot, MCTS Toronto is an action-packed 1-Day session featuring acclaimed Canadian prog rockers The Dave Barrett Trio, fresh from an album produced by mentor Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson. The band will be augmented for the session by special guest vocalist Paul Reid.

In keeping with previous MCTS’s, attendees will spend a hands-on day working with Alan in Noble Street’s spacious SSL 4056 E/G control room, gaining invaluable experience in all aspects of recording and assisting in the production decisions.

Alan will keep attendees fully engaged from miking and isolation in the recording area to EQ and processing in the control room to interaction with the performers. Options and alternatives are freely discussed as the final product takes shape throughout the day.

MCTS Toronto will be especially interesting as it features an established band in the progressive rock genre, which will surely take Alan back to his days working with Pink Floyd and Yes (the Parsons-produced Symphonic Music of Yes album featuring Alan’s collaborator on ASSR Julian Colbeck on keyboards.).

If you recall our MCTS in Los Angeles last year, participants will get a unique opportunity to interact with legendary producer, engineer, and artist Alan Parsons inside a professional recording studio. Watch our video coverage from the Los Angeles event:

Only 20 of the Platinum seats are being made available for this prestigious event so early reservations are strongly advised.

Tickets and detailed information are available now at Global Music Depot.

The Facebook event page for MCTS Toronto can be found here.
