Have the drummer kick the drum, with the beater of course, and you put your hand in the hole with your knuckles first. You will feel the air blast from the hit on the hairs on the back of your hand. Move it around until you feel the maximum air pressure. That is where you place the mic. Sometimes it's just a matter of millimeters 'til its in the right place. This will give you the most impact from the kick drum. I have been using a Shure Beta 52 for years now..ever since they came out. To me they are just a better a version of the AKG D-112.
By the way, I did get to work with Simon Philips years ago on a Joe Satriani CD, Flying In A Blue Dream. He taught me so many trick of tuning and Micing drums, and I thank him for that.
