I'm quite surprised Alan Parsons never mentions side-chainning kick and toms signals onto the bass compressor for low-end control, not even in the "Mixing" movies. I mean, it's not that I think he should do it, but I'd really like to hear his opinion about this technique. What would be the other reasonable approaches towards low-end issues, besides arrangement?

There are many techniques

There are many techniques used for bass management and ducking is just one of them. Can't say I've ever had to use ducking though, I prefer more subtle methods.
